Chiropody

A chiropodist, also known as a podiatrist, is a healthcare professional who specializes in diagnosing and treating disorders of the feet, ankles, and lower limbs, managing both chronic and acute foot conditions, helping to improve mobility and overall foot health.

What Does a Chiropodist Deal With

Dr. Ali Subzwari will cover a wide range of foot-related issues, including:

Foot injuries: Fractures, sprains, and strains of the foot or ankle.

Infections: Fungal or bacterial infections of the nails or skin, like athlete’s foot

Corns, calluses, and bunions: These are common foot conditions often caused by pressure, friction, or abnormal foot structure.

Plantar fasciitis: Inflammation of the tissue along the bottom of the foot, which can cause heel pain.

Diabetic foot care: People with diabetes often have foot problems due to poor circulation or nerve damage, and chiropodists provide care to prevent ulcers, infections, and other complications.

Nail problems: Treating ingrown toenails, thickened nails, or nails that are damaged due to injury or infection.

Orthotics: Custom insoles to correct foot abnormalities and relieve pain from issues like flat feet or high arches.

Foot deformities: Conditions like hammertoes or claw toes, which can cause pain and affect walking.

Gait issues: Diagnosing and correcting problems with walking, often using orthotic devices or physical therapy recommendations.

What to Expect

What is an appointment like?

At your initial podiatry (or chiropody) assessment, you can expect a comprehensive evaluation of your feet and overall lower limb health.

Medical History Review

  • Will ask about your general health, any underlying medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, arthritis), medications, and past injuries.

  • They’ll also inquire about your foot problems, such as pain, discomfort, or specific concerns like corns, calluses, bunions, or ingrown toenails.

Foot Examination

  • Will examine your feet, nails, and skin condition. They may check for signs of infections, deformities, circulation issues, and other abnormalities.

  • They’ll assess your gait (how you walk) and posture, looking for any imbalances or irregularities that could contribute to foot problems.

Biomechanical Assessment

  • If you have concerns about joint or muscle pain, the chiropodist may perform a biomechanical assessment, which includes checking the alignment of bones and joints in your feet, ankles, knees, and hips.

  • They may watch how your feet move when you walk or stand to identify issues like flat feet, overpronation, or high arches.

Nail and Skin Care

  • If needed, the chiropodist may provide immediate treatment for issues like thickened nails, corns, calluses, or fungal infections.

  • For ingrown toenails, they might trim and treat the affected nail or refer you to another chiropodist.

Footwear Advice

  • The chiropodist may review your footwear or previous orthotics to ensure it supports your feet properly. They’ll offer recommendations if your shoes or orthotics are contributing to your foot problems.

Treatment Plan

  • Based on the assessment, the podiatrist will discuss a personalized treatment plan. This could include advice on self-care, exercises, orthotics (custom insoles), or further treatments like nail surgery or physical therapy.

Follow-up Appointments

  • If necessary, follow-up appointments will be scheduled for ongoing care.
